THE ARTISTS
Ann McCall’s statement
Ann McCall’s principal preoccupation is with landscape and natural phenomena. Some of the works are passive : they deal with a tranquil space and opening vistas. Other works are more active. These deal with phenomena such as the agitated movement of grasses blowing in the wind or the changeability of weather moving from storm clouds to clearing and sun. The elements of landscape reflect, in their variety, the psychological states of the artist or the viewer. They can be interpreted subjectively.
In both media used by the artist, namely, mixed media acrylic on paper and collagraph prints, weather is dealt with through the use of colour and through the use of symbols indicating winds, precipitation or clearing. The intention is to harmonize the scientific approach with the actual visual images found in landscape or in the atmosphere.
Light is an important focus in the works : it is a natural light but sometimes with a mysterious quality representing the uncertainty in the forces of nature.
